4 Free Automated Advertising Strategies

Marketing is a constant struggle for solo consultants and small business owners.  It’s always a gamble whether your marketing effort will be worth the money and time invested, but it’s a necessary evil.  Without marketing, there’s no way for people with needs (customers) to know that we are here to fulfill them.

Without a large marketing department at your disposal, many traditional marketing techniques require a substantial upfront investment with unpredictable results.  Examples of this include direct mailings, fliers, signs, and ads in the paper, on the radio, and on TV.

I’d like to explore some advertising techniques that are not only completely free, but also automated.  What I mean by automated is that once they are set-up, they have the potential to continually provide marketing leverage for you over time.  Keep in mind, however, that these techniques do require some significant time investment up-front, and the results may be slow coming at first.  Often  that leverage is compounded over time, so the longer these free marketing techniques are in place for your business, the more turn-around you’ll see as a result.

Time For Spring (Computer) Cleaning!

It’s that time of year again.  The warmth is overtaking the cold and people are crawling out of their caves to enjoy the outdoors.  That could mean less business for us computer repair folks, as people are spending less time in front of their glowing CRT altar.

One marketing trend that you can take advantage of is the tried and true “Spring Cleaning” ritual that many folks go through this time of year.  While cleaning out closets and scrubbing floors is fresh on your customer’s minds, why not remind them that their computer can get rather dirty too (literally and digitally).

5 Overlooked Characteristics Of A Successful Computer Consultant

Lets face it, there are a lot of “computer guys” out there.  It’s no secret that the IT industry is growing and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.  The demand is there and the money is good.

However, not every computer guy is created equal.  Just because you have a degree related to computers, you solve all your friend’s computer problems in less than 15 minutes, and you can hack into the pentagon, doesn’t mean you’re cut out to start your own computer repair business.

Since starting my business, many customers I service seem to be relieved when they realize that I’m not out to make a quick buck, and that I can speak to them about their computer in terms that they can understand and relate to.  Some have even related to me the pains they’ve experienced at the hands of some other computer guys that they’ve worked with in the past.  Couple these experiences with the fact that, through interviews on this website and other encounters with successful computer techs, I’ve noticed that there are some characteristics that make certain independent computer consultants really stand out among the competition.

There are many obvious traits that one must posses in order to be a successful independent computer consultant.  You must have people skills, business savvy, and broad technical knowledge.  But that’s just the beginning.

Never Stop Learning: An Interview With Bryce Whitty Of Technibble.com

It wasn’t until after I started this blog that I came across the website Technibble.com. I wish I would have found it sooner, because it’s proven to be the single best resource I’ve found for people like me who are just starting to forge their own path in the computer support/repair business field.

The man who started Technibble, Bryce Whitty, created the site because he saw a need for an online resource for independent computer consultants. Not a general “techie” website or a “how to fix windows errors” message board, but a community dedicated specifically to the nerd entrepreneur trying to start his own business.

Technibble offers great resources like an extremely helpful and friendly forum, a blog, and the Computer Business Kit, which is a collection of documents and forms that you’ll need when starting a computer business.  I plan on purchasing the CBK for review here on this site in the future.

Bryce himself runs his own one-man computer consulting business which gives him the inspiration for his website.  I decided to pick his brain a little and see what approach he took to starting his business.  Check out his responses below.

Computer Guy’s Toolbox: LogMeIn Free

The following is a guest contribution written by Tim Lenahan, author of many blogs including TimmyJohnBoy.com, where he often speaks about technology and computer support topics.  Make sure to welcome Tim in the comments below the post!

This post marks two firsts for Y.F.N.C.G.  It’s the first post in a new series I’ll be running here called “Computer Guy’s Toolbox”, which serves to highlight a product or service that I think will benefit the independent computer tech with an emphasis on affordability.  This is also the first post written by a guest contributor!  If you are interested in joining the Y.F.N.C.G. team as a guest contributor, please contact me and let me know what you’d like to contribute!

What is LogMeIn?

I’ve been using LogMeIn Free for quite some time and have fallen in love.  LogMeIn.comoffers several paid services with different levels of usability, but in this post I would like to focus on LogMeIn Free.

My First Customer: The Aftermath

So how did hings turn out with my first official customer as a business owner?

If you’ll recall in my initial post on the subject, a customer was referred to me a bit before I was fully prepared to start taking on customers.  I decided to take the client, mostly for experience, but also to get a bit more money into my business account.  The lady wasn’t too specific about the problem (are they ever?), but I thought it sounded like a corrupt HD.  Turns out that it was.

PC Repair: On-Site Vs. In-Shop

There seem to be two schools of thought when it comes to the best way to run a computer maintenance or consulting business from home.  Some people believe that it’s impossible to do good quality work and get enough turn-over if you don’t take the customer’s computer back to your “shop”.  On the other hand, there are techs that work exclusively at the customer’s home and never bring work back home with them.

Which way is the best way to run a PC repair business?

As I’ve done in the past, I decided to weigh the pros and cons of each scenario and see how they stack up against each other using good old-fashioned reasoning.  Keep in mind, I’m not taking into account the possibility of opening a store front…that’s a whole different ball of wax and I’ll save that debate for a later time.  In the following lists I’ve lined out some of the more important factors that I could think of, drawing from my own experiences.

Book Review: Computer Repair Business Lessons Learned

computer repair businessWelcome to another book review from Your Friendly Neighborhood Computer Guy.  I try to keep these reviews simple to read and concise in delivery so you can quickly find out if the book being reviewed is right for you.  I focus on books specifically about starting a computer business and I hope to tailor my reviews to folks who are in the early stages of starting a computer consulting business.  The thing you’ll need to keep in mind is that I’m still in the process of learning as I read and review these books, so my reviews are from a start-up perspective.  I think that fact may benefit those who are in my situation more than if these books were reviewed by a “seasoned pro”.

The book I’m reviewing this time around is Computer Business Lessons Learned by Daniel Hand. I found this book while searching online for information about starting a computer business. One thing that grabbed my attention about this book were the words “Lessons Learned”. That tells me that the author has already had his trial by fire and he’s ready to share his insights. The website says that CBLL is “a true book that reveals exactly how to be successful in the Computer Repair Business.” Does the book live up to the hype? Lets find out…

The Computer Guy’s Corner #1

This is my first foray into “link round-up” writing. About once a week, hopefully, I’ll be posting a small article with a handful of links to useful news, reviews, and blog postings that I’ve found across the net pertaining to any aspect of computer consulting whether it be small business news, productivity, tech gossip, troubleshooting tools, industry news, or any random stuff that I find helpful. This will set into motion the creation of a solid archive of relevant links to articles that should prove helpful to all you computer guys and to anyone looking to start a computer business, or any business for that matter.

Top 10 Reasons To Be Nice To Your Computer Guy

Historically, the computer guy, like many other service professionals, has been undervalued and under appreciated.  But beware, we computer folk hold a lot more of the cards then some may realize.  For those people who tend to treat their computer guy like a second class citizen, here are the top 10 reasons why you may want to reconsider giving us a hard time (David Letterman style): [Read more...]
